Community Gardens

Community Gardens are gardens placed in a location accessible to community members, who adopt the garden, choose the types of plants they want to grow, and then nurture the plants through the stages of growth. These gardens provide the opportunity to physical activity, access to fresh fruits and vegetables, social interactions, and neighborhood beautification.

The Medalla Hilliard Neighborhood Center offers daily programs for seniors including the Meals on Wheels program.  They have teamed up with the Mount Calavary’s Baptist Church youth group.  The youth do the planting while the seniors water and nurture the plants.  The produce that is harvested is used in the Meals on Wheels program or sent home with the seniors and youth groups families. During the growing time the youth group participates in monthly activities at the garden bed site.

Even Start Family Literacy Center

The Even Start Family Literacy Center provides a variety of services to the community that wrap around developing life skills such as growing your own fruits and vegetables.  Currently several families with small children are involved.
