Community Gardens: Year in Review 2003
Summer Karen Wilson, Director of the Williamson County and Cities Health District, announced on May 5, 2003 that the General Mills Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to the Williamson County & Cities Health District’s Children’s Garden. The Children’s Garden Project was one of 50 gardens in the nation elected for funding, and it was the only one chosen in Texas. The funds will be used to establish a children’s garden that offers hands-on education to children, families, schools, and daycare centers. Those who visit the garden will learn about plants, nature, and tasty fruits and vegetables. They will also be introduced to a variety of ways to incorporate a vegetable garden into their back yard, apartment, or playground. Features in the garden will include: 1) Four
theme gardens: Pizza, vitamin; rainbow; and fruit Winter On Saturday January 4, 2003 approximately 12 Fox 7 employees volunteered their time at Heritage Community Gardens to help build compost bins, dig holes for memorial fruit trees, fill garden beds with dirt and shovel gravel for pathways. This was through the Fox 7 Labor of Love program. Thank you Fox 7.
