About Us
The Williamson County Community Garden and
Nutrition Program is a a division of
the
Williamson County &
Cities Health District's Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program.
Our focus is to support your commitment to
healthy living. We promote eating 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily
and increasing your level of physical activity. We have established community gardens, a
horticultural education course (Expert Gardener Certification), and cooking and
nutrition classes (From the Garden to the Table / Del Jardin a la Mesa), to help
you achieve your goals.
History
Two recent surveys completed in Williamson County revealed that 80% of both our youth and adults are consuming less than the recommended 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day (2004 BRFSS, 2005 YAWN). It also revealed that 63% of our adults are overweight and 36% of our youth are at risk for being overweight or obese. These risk rates are twice the national average. So we encourage you to make the commitment to eat healthy and live an active lifestyle through community gardening. Your choices today can prevent future health problems such as heart disease and obesity. In fact, 5 of the 10 leading causes of death are associated with diets high in fat, low in fiber, and low in fruits and vegetables.
